AUSTRIAN DESIGN PIONEERS

With just under 70 exhibitors attending, including 31 designers, 32 Austrian companies and five students from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Graz University of Technology, Vienna University of Technology and New Design University St. Pölten, Austria’s contribution to this year’s Salone del Mobile and its “Fuorisalone” side programme is more extensive and exciting than ever before. At the heart of Brera, Milan’s design district, in the renowned meeting place of La Pelota, Austrian design will be the star attraction from 14 to 19 April 2015 under the banner of AUSTRIAN DESIGN PIONEERS. The Austrian design exhibition will be organised by two architects known as Vasku&Klug, who, in spite of their youth, have already been extremely successful in the international arena.

“The exhibition is dedicated to pioneering spirit in Austrian design. AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA also demonstrated pioneering spirit in 2010, when it first launched this exhibition. It has grown gradually since then, to such an extent that this year we are delighted to welcome around 70 exhibitors through our doors. It’s an impressive Austrian success story,” explains Walter Koren, Head of AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA. The event is taking place as part of the go-international internationalisation initiative run by Austria’s Ministry of Science, Research and Economy and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, and is supported by the Austrian furniture industry and the Federal Chancellery.

Preliminary Objects – The Rug by Stefan Auberg
Furniture has identity-building characteristics that are similar to clothes and hairstyle. The industry tries to appeal to the consumers’ urge to be unique with “cus- tomisable” products, mostly by selling empty promises. With the help of a hair trimmer, everyone can per sonalise Auberg’s carpet and make it more representative of themselves. By trimming the carpet, the underlying layers of colour are revealed, and the consumers can let their creativity run wild.

Captured by Michael Anastassiades for Lobmeyr
Light refracts in crystal. The natural interaction between these two elements in a fascinating object has been the vision of this collaboration. A minimal, elegant and strong metal structure, typical of Michael Anastassiades’ work, gives hold and position to precious crystal parts refined by Lobmeyr. The central glass sphere cut in alternative ways guards the light source and refracts the light. Two hemispheres of different larger diameters indicate further orbits. Light, shade and the interaction between geometry and space make these exciting objects. The series consists of a table light, a floor light and a suspension light.

Shadow by Robert Comploj for: Glashütte Comploj, 2014

How do you capture the sounds of the sea? How do you illustrate the hustle, bustle and colour of a marketplace? Comploj looks for ways to give life to moods, noises and atmospheres. In this regard, his influences include old Venetian techniques and modern Scandinavian design. So just like each individual wave in the sea, each glass object should be unmistakeably unique.

Tilda Stool by: Nina Mair, for Forcher
Brass and leather unite unpretentiously in a clean design. A high-quality round brass profile takes the form of a simple stool for everyday use, which is ro- bust despite its elegant proportions. The handcrafted, naturally tanned leather creates an interesting contrast with the shiny metal surface. The stool is available in two different metallic finishes: brass and steel. Two types of side tables complement the Tilda product family. Matching the appearance of the metal legs, the tabletop is made of coloured glass or wood with a glossy finish.
